For about the price of a pizza, and without asking anyone’s permission.
Every organization in this space says it wants young people and then builds a structure where you wait fifteen years for a real job. We built ours the other way:
Many pay little or nothing. Many are uncontested for a decade at a time. All of them decide something that touches you.
| Office | What it actually decides |
|---|---|
| School board | Curriculum, budget, superintendent, calendar, facilities |
| Fire district commission | Whether the station is staffed at night, where levy money goes |
| Park & recreation district | Fields, trails, pools, programs, hours |
| Cemetery district | Land, maintenance, rates — 91% of these races had one candidate in the November 2025 general elections |
| Water & sewer district | Rates, infrastructure, hookups, capacity for new housing |
| Port district | Waterfront, industrial land, economic development, sometimes an airport |
| City or town council | Zoning, public safety budget, permits, roads, housing |
Look at that cemetery district number again. In nine out of ten of those races, no voter had a choice. Somebody is going to hold that seat. It might as well be somebody who wanted it.
Neither was anyone currently holding these seats, before they held them. No education requirement. No professional requirement. No prior office. No interview, no gatekeeper. The system was deliberately built to let a regular person walk in — and then everyone quietly forgot that and started waiting to be asked. Consider this the ask.
Some of these seats meet once a month for two hours. Some meet quarterly. We’ll tell you honestly which ones are heavy and which ones are light — that’s session one of the workshop, and it’s free.
Good. Neither does anyone else, including the people already in office. You will not be asked to have a position on every question in local government. You’ll be asked to show up, read the packet, and vote your judgment. And we will never ask you what you believe. Not once, not ever.
Ten members on a campus can petition for a student charter, run their own meet-and-greets, and send a delegate to the state board.
